Lesson plan 7 ( Obsession with Fast Food and Fatty Foods)

Objective:
The objective of this lesson plan is to get the children familiar with the fast food companies and how their food might taste good, but are not healthy for our bodies. Students will learn to question that there are so many of fast food chains just every three blocks the same fast food is available why? The students will also learn that some of these third world countries can not feed their starving people, but some of these countries will have a MacDonald. They will learn about the increasing people that don’t have time to eat meals at home that will turn to fast food. They will learn the hard statistic of how much a North American may eat fast food for a week. The students will learn that the McDonalds Golden Arches are being recognized more than the Christian Cross. The goal for this lesson plan is to get the students to learn about a specific fast food joint and find out how they market their food, how many countries they are located in, who are their sponsors etc. This will also stimulate their minds not only on fast food, but overall how can they provide healthy food environment. Should schools have vending machine and should they able to offer an alternative meal that is more nutritious. They will learn to question and think about if food labels for fatty foods should have warning signs. They will also have discussion if grocery stores should eliminate fatty and junky food why or why not. By the end of this lesson plan students will begin to question more about these unhealthy food and come up with an alternative plan or how to prevent from eating these fatty foods. They will also learn more about a specific fast food chain and see how they market, who their partners are and who do they specifically target in the food commercials.
Timeline:
The lesson plan will begin with the teacher giving some quick facts about fast food joints and providing some statistics about how much a normal individual would eat per week. Then the teacher will introduce the movie they will be watching in class that is “ Super size me. Before playing the movie everyone will get an blank sheet where they can dot out some points. The teacher at the end of the movie will be breaking the class in two to have a class debate. The students will have discussion about the movie and than will have debate on how we can prevent children from eating fast food or fatty food. They will have discussion on how school should have vending machine or not. They will also have discussion on if grocery stores should eliminate all the fatty and junky food in their stores or why or why not. Once the discussion or debate is done the teacher will provide the students with instruction about a project they will be working on. The students will have to work in pairs and do a research on fast food restaurant. They will research on how they market and who their targets are. Where they are located in how many countries and how much to people consume of their food. Students will also have to bring in a commercial of this fast-food joint or a song that is associated with it.
Activity:
The activity is a class room discussion and debate. After watching the movie the students will get to express what saw and what they felt. Then the teacher will divide the class in to two and give them either option to debate to having vending machine and unhealthy food in school or not. They will also have to debate about if grocery stores should eliminate all junk food or not.
