- Construction paper
- Glue
- Markers
- Crayons
- Scissors
- Old cereal boxes (children cereal boxes)
- Cardboard
Objective :
After learning about food commercials and their marketing techniques to reel in consumers the students will make their own ads for cereal boxes. The students will bring in old cereal boxes that they normally like to eat. They will examine what all the cereal boxes have in common. They will analyze how most cereal boxes have a common themes and how they all use the same types of publicity stunt. They normally always have some kinds concept where the child if off on an adventure. Children will learn how they use catchy phrases to get the children attention either by saying it is new and improve so now they must try it. They will also learn that most cereal have their own spokes character such as toucan, tony the tiger, and pop, crac, and snap . They will see how most cereal companies follow that same pattern to attract children. Once that students have learned that most cereal companies have the same ploy to target their audiences. They will use these technique and make their own cereal boxes. From this the students will understand marketing techniques and they will get to apply it on their own cereal boxes.
Timeline :
The lesson plan will begin with the teacher showing an example of children’s cereal box. The teacher will tell the students to describe what they see. They will notice bright colors, spokes character they will see that there are adventure games and some of them might have a toy inside. Then the teacher will discuss why these techniques might be used and stimulate a discussion. Once the students have understood the marketing techniques they will have an opportunity to make their own cereal boxes. The teacher will pass them a cardboard and basically they will have to use all the marketing techniques they have learned and incorporate in their own cereal boxes. They will have checklist to go over if they have bright colors, spokes character, game and etc. Once they are done they will present it to the class and present the specific techniques and what age group they are targeting.
Activity:
The students will get to work on their own cereal boxes. They will use the marketing techniques that the teacher taught and use them on their cereal boxes. They will have to follow the checklist to see if they followed all the instruction and got most of the marketing techniques on their cereal boxes. Then they will present their cereal boxes to the class and explain why they used certain techniques.
