Lesson Plan 4 ( Health VS unhealthy)

 

Material :

 

  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Chart that is divided into healthy foods and unhealthy foods
  • Magazines and grocery store fliers  
  • Sample Poem
  • Computer
  • projector

 

Objective:

 

The plan for today is to formulate a group discussion on what types of food are healthy and what types of foods are unhealthy and this will let them voice out their opinions.. Before today lesson plan, students will have to bring magazines that have food in it or grocery store fliers. The goal for this lesson plan is to build on the prior lesson plans and for them to understand why some food are considered unhealthy and are still promoted on television. It is also to get the children more informed about what kinds of substances make the food unhealthy for example sugar or fried food. They will also learn that there are different types of fats and that not all fats are bad for the body. They will learn to make wise decisions when it will come to eating. The class will also learn about the specific nutrients that are involved with food being healthy and unhealthy. They will also learn to put the food in healthy and unhealthy categories. The students will receive an empty sheet that will have the two categories and they will fill it out with examples so this will help them with their writing skills. They will also learn how to write a poem. After having discussion about healthy and unhealthy food the students will have a chance to express their feeling on paper. The students will create their own poem on healthy food. Once they are done doing that they will stick it on a black construction paper. With rest of space available on the left and right side they will make a collage of healthy food on the right side and unhealthy food on the left side.

 

Timeline:

The teacher will begin the class by asking the students what types of food are healthy and unhealthy. The teacher will then pass out a table that will have the two categories and will have space available so that they can place examples of those types of food. The teacher will give them a brief lecture on healthy and unhealthy food using a PowerPoint presentation, which will have key words that they would need to know with the images of that food. The teacher will provide them of examples of each types of food for example for unhealthy drinking soda is bad. It is bad because it like drinking 10 teaspoon of sugar. Then the teacher will provide an example of a poem that has rhyming in it and is about healthy and unhealthy food. This example poem will be displayed on power point and will be red  out loud to the class. With the rest of the class time the students will go back to the desk work on their poems. Once that is done they will stick their poem with a small food collage. The next day the students will present their poem in front of the class.

 

Activity:

The students will have to fill out a chart with their own examples of healthy and unhealthy food. Once they are done that they will share it one partner and give some of these examples during group discussion. Once that is done they will get to work on their rhyming poem on healthy or unhealthy food. Once that is done they will cut of their poem and stick in the center of  black construction paper. Then the two  empty sides they will make a collage of healthy and unhealthy food. Once they are done they will have that night to prepare and practice reading the poetry out loud. The next day they will present they poetry and their collage to the class.

 

Assignment:

 

Create a rhyming poem on healthy and unhealthy food using information that they have learned during their 4 classes.

 

Assessment:

 

Does the poem make an identification of healthy and unhealthy eating (2points)

Does the poem have rhymes (2 points)

Is the spelling correct (2 points)

The presentation over all was it clear , volume , speed,  (2 points)

Creativity (2points)

Total : /10 points
